According to the analytics firm, Flurry, last year there were 328 million apps downloaded on Christmas Day. That is an increase of 36% from 2011! Why? Well, clearly the popularity of apps is growing larger and larger every day. But why Christmas? Think about it. Your kids wake you up at the crack of dawn to open their gifts from Santa. You then clean up (or not), eat some breakfast, and then the kids run off and play with their new toys. You are left to go about your merry way, possibly playing with your own new gadget. And what’s one to do with a new gadget? Download lots and lots of apps. This year that amount is expected to be around 450 million. That’s just one day, people!
App developers and publishers are very aware of this trend. When building an app development calendar for the year, September is the month where many shops start building new apps, upgrades, freemium products, and bonus material. In November, bug and beta testing is performed to prepare for the app store rollouts two weeks before Christmas.
So what app categories score big on Christmas Day? According to a study commissioned by app testing platform SOASTA and performed by the Harris Interactive Group, 30% of Americans who own a smartphone or tablet plan on downloading an app on Christmas Day. Out of this group, games prove to be the top app category at 49%, music being a close second at 43%. The rest of the list goes like this: weather apps (27%), shopping (25%), social media (24%), news (21%), photography (19%), video (18%), banking (15%), and transportation (12%).
