Tips to Create the Perfect Mobile App Icon

You’re interested in creating a mobile app for your business with the intent of boosting sales and finding a new way to connect to your consumer. No big deal; it’s just an app, right?  Well, not so fast!  That tiny icon is valuable real estate that must attract attention, become recognizable, and represent your company and brand.  Here are a few tips on how to create an icon that will do just that:

  1. Keep the Design Simple: You have a small window of opportunity to attract a new user. Although it may be tempting, it’s best not to include too much artwork. Instead keep design clean and streamlined. The worst apps are the ones that make people squint to see the imagery.  If you do choose to use multiple graphics, make one element the focus.
  1. Use a Unique Symbol or Shape: The best mobile apps are quickly recognizable and capture people’s attention.  To accomplish this, consider a unique symbol or shape created to represent your company and brand.   Another option is to simply use the first letter of your company name. Here the font is what is most important and best if kept simple, yet still noticeable.
  1. Make the Right Decision on Color: Choosing the color of your icon is just as important as the symbol or shape, and again the color needs to represent your brand. Consider using color psychology here. For instance red can trigger feelings of thirst and hunger while representing love, passion, action, and adventure. Blue represents stability, trust, authority, and success. Green represents nature and renewal. Bright, vibrant colors are ideal as they typically garner the most attention. And of course the color you use should ultimately speak to your brand image and logo.
  1. Test Different Versions of your App: Any good app development company will tell you it is a good idea to create several versions of your app icon before submitting to Apple.  Once you’ve created the apps, take advantage of different tools such as UsabilityHub’s Five Second Test or Pickfu. This gives you the opportunity to gauge audience reaction and the ability to easily edit the design.
